Watch Repair FAQ

Is my watch just overwound???

First, never say your watch is overwound . Unless you take a pair of pliers and force the watch to wind after it is fully wound and break the winding gears or the spring - then your watch is NOT overwound!!! If someone wants to sell you a watch and tells you that "It is just overwound!" - then either 1. - He doesn't know what he is talking about, or 2 - he is being dishonest and is handing you a line (hook, line, and sinker) to make you think the watch has little wrong with it. Watches stop for a reason. If you find a watch has stopped, the first thing you do is try to wind it. That usually works. However, suppose you drop your watch and break the staff. Then your watch will stop. You can then wind it back up, but it will not start running. It does not start because the staff is broke, not because it is overwound. You should have your watch serviced every couple of years if you want to carry it and use it. You certainly don't wait for your car to stop before you change the oil, DO YOU????

What is the recommended service interval for mechanical watches?

We recommend that your timepiece be serviced every 3 to 5 years. The interval between services is influenced by several factors, including frequency of use and climate. A watch that is worn daily experiences more wear and tear on the movement parts and may require service closer to the 3 year interval, while a watch that is worn on special occasions may require service closer to the 5 year interval.

Who is authorized to service my watch after it was serviced with USA Watch Repair?

Only USA Watch Repair shop should service your timepiece. In the event that your watch has service performed by a watch technician in a deferent shop and not at USA Watch Repair in any location other than those listed on our website we will not honor any service guarantee/warranty.

What is included in a completed overhaul?

1) Dismantling, cleaning, assembly & oiling of the watch movement.
2) Repair or replacement of worn or damaged moving parts.
3) Timing and accuracy corrections as per industry standards.
4) Casing and checking of the various functions.

What is water resistance?

Almost all watch cases and their components are assembled to provide water-resistance to the depth indicated on the case. All crystals, crowns, pushers, bezels and case back are fitted with gaskets to enhance this feature.

I wear my watch diving and swimming - how often should i have it tested for watches-resistance ?

If you wear your watch regularly for diving and/or swimming a water-resistance test is recommended on a yearly basis.

What is the repair warranty?

We will guarantee the service for 12 months under our limited repair warranty. This warranty covers all the parts installed and the work performed at the time of service.

I have an old watch that I am interested in learning about. What information do you need from me?

We will be glad to search our archives for you. Our archives are based upon movement number, case shapes and movement shapes, and we will need the following information from you:
1. Digital images of the watch (front and back)
2. Digital images of the movement
3. Movement number – this number is etched on the actual movement itself and you will need to take the watch to a qualified watchmaker who can uncase the movement and provide you with the number
You can e-mail us the information and we will perform an archival search on your behalf.
